Fictional Characters who are Disabled

I'm reading the book "Folk of the Fringe" about a post apocolyptic world where the landscape has changed and the people who are left are struggling in whatever way they can to rebuild. There is a disabled school teacher in this story who is very compelling:

Carpenter entered all his lectures and stored them in memory, so that he could sit still as ice in his chair, making eye contact with each student in turn daring them to be inattentive. There were advantages in letting a machine speak for him; he learned many years ago that it frightened people to have a mechanical voice speak his words, while his lips were motionless. It was monstruous, it made him seem dangerous and strange. Which he far preferred to the way he looked, weak as a worm, his skinny, twisted, palsied body rigid in his chair; his body looked strange, but pathetic. Only when the synthesizer spoke his acid words did he earn respect from the people who always, always looked downward at him.

Good stuff.

Other disabled characters that I find compelling are:
Professor Charles Xavier, as played by Patrick Stewart in the X-Men Movies. I never read the comics.
Lieutenant Dan from Forrest Gump.
Ironside

I'm sure there are more, but I'm drawing a blank. I wonder if that is because there are so many compelling real PWDs that I admire.

Another list

Orson Scott Card and Alan Dean Foster are authors who frequently feature disabled (or shall we call them "differently abled) characters in a variety of ways, showcasing their strengths, and weakness, as no different from the rest. They bring out the humanity in their characters, which just makes fans like me thrive on their books.

Watch All the Excitement of the Paralympics on...

Just when you thought all the excitement of the Winter Olympics was all over, the Paralympics are here to pick up right where the Olympics left off. Torino is once again the place to be.

To get to the action just click on the following link

Paralympic Sport TV

I am hoping that everyone will tell all their friends to spread the word that the Paralympic Games have begun! This is the first time the Paralympics will be shown in its entirety and it's all going to be on the Internet. Please tell all your friends about this! No major broadcast companies will be showing these Paralympic Games, but I bet you if enough people click on ParalympicsportTV from now through March 19, every broadcasting company will get the message that the Paralympic Games IS a product for national Television. I have been watching the Opening Ceremonies today, and so far, it is every bit as spectacular as the Olympic Opening Ceremonies.

Make no bones about it -- this is a major event and there is no reason every household in America shouldn't have a chance to witness all the festivities in Torino. So please, spread the word! It is time to show the world "The Passion" that is The Paralympic Games! USA! USA! USA! And everyone else.

Thank you all for your participation.

The Passing of a Shining Star, Dana Reeve

We at ChooseAbility would like to express our deepest sympathy of the passing of Dana Reeve. She was definitely a shining light not only to her family and friends, but to all those in search of beauty and light in an unforgiving world. Dana’s dedication to her spouse, Christopher Reeve, was just one way she showed the generosity of her soul, but her bravery in facing the adversity of this life gave hope even to those who didn’t know her personally. It is said of God’s chosen, “by their fruit, you shall know them”. Her grace did give her away.

May God Bless Will and the rest of her family and friends, that they may be comforted by the One who sent for her. We must celebrate her life by following her example and continuing the work she believed in. She will be missed, but surely not forgotten.

Miracle Workers - Premiere Monday Night

"The premise of 'Miracle Workers' requires two doctors (Redmond Burke and William Cohn) and two nurses (Tamara Houston and Janna Bullock) to connect with suffering individuals whose ailments might be cured by 'cutting-edge procedures.'

This goes on to be a very bad review, one that makes me think twice about even watching, but I think it will be important for PWDs and people involved in that community to have an opinion, if only because they are promoting the show like crazy: I've seen ads all over the Oscars as well as the Winter Olympics last week (don't forget to watch the Paralympics).
